The SpecSMART Eye Clinic Guide to Contact Lens Success

Everything you need to know for healthy, comfortable, and clear vision.

1 The Golden Rules of Hygiene

  • Wash and Dry: Always wash your hands with lint-free soap and dry them completely. Water is a source of bacteria.
  • Fresh Solution Every Time: For monthly lenses, never "top off" old solution. Discard used liquid and fill the case with fresh solution every night.
  • The "No Water" Rule: Never rinse your lenses or case with tap water.

2 Insertion & Removal Made Easy

  • The Taco Test: Place the lens on your fingertip. If the edges flare out like a soup bowl, it's inside out. If it looks like a perfect "U" (a taco shape), it's ready to go.
  • The "Look Up" Method: If you're struggling, look upward and place the lens on the white part of your eye, then gently slide it over the center and blink.

3 Managing Comfort & Dryness

  • Blink More: We blink 60% less when looking at screens. Remind yourself to blink fully to re-wet the lens.
  • Lens-Safe Drops: Only use re-wetting drops approved for your specific lens type. If dryness persists, visit our Dry Eye Clinic.

4 The "STOP" Signals (Remove lenses and call us immediately if you see:)

  • R - Redness that doesn't go away.
  • S - Sharp pain or unusual discomfort.
  • V - Vision that is suddenly blurred or foggy.

5 Why Your Annual Check-up Matters

A contact lens is a medical device. During your annual Contact Lens Evaluation, we ensure your lenses aren't causing microscopic changes to your eye surface and check for the latest lens technologies that could improve your comfort.

The Medical Difference

A glasses prescription only measures your visual acuity at a distance from your eye. Because contact lenses sit directly on your cornea, a medical contact lens exam includes microscopic measurements of your eye's surface curvature and an evaluation of your tear film. This ensures the lenses will not cause long-term damage or deprive your eyes of oxygen.

Contact lenses are classified as medical devices. A poorly fitted lens can cause severe corneal ulcers, infections, and permanent scarring. At SpecSMART Eye Clinic, our senior optometrists ensure that your lenses are perfectly calibrated for your unique eye anatomy and lifestyle, prioritizing your long-term ocular health.

For medically necessary lenses, we offer priority processing for corporate patients, working directly with your insurer to verify coverage for complex optical rehabilitation.

In acute cases, we prioritize your vision. Our expedited insurance clearance protocol allows us to stabilize your condition immediately while our team handles the urgent HMO verification in the background.

Comfort & Complex Cases

Absolutely. We prescribe specialized "Toric" lenses designed specifically for astigmatism. These lenses are weighted differently than standard contacts to remain stable on your eye, providing sharp, consistent vision without blurring when you blink.

Dryness is the number one reason people stop wearing contacts, but lens technology has advanced significantly. Our specialists excel in "hard-to-fit" cases. We offer high-moisture, oxygen-permeable daily disposables, and for severe cases, we can fit specialty Scleral lenses that actually trap a layer of soothing saline against your eye throughout the day.

Lifestyle & Age

There is no strict minimum age; it depends heavily on the child's maturity and hygiene habits. However, we frequently fit children as young as 8 to 12 years old, especially utilizing specialized myopia-control lenses designed to slow down the progression of short-sightedness during their critical developmental years.

Unless you are specifically prescribed a continuous-wear lens by your SpecSMART Eye Clinic doctor, sleeping in lenses significantly increases your risk of severe eye infections. We highly recommend daily disposables for the safest, most hygienic wearing experience.
