Glaucoma – The Silent Thief of Sight in Nigeria. Early Detection and Treatment

Vision Changes In Glaucoma Disease | SpecSMART Eye Clinic Ikoyi

By Dr. Deborah Oparaji (OD)

What is Glaucoma?

Glaucoma is a group of eye diseases that damage the optic nerve, which transmits visual information from the eye to the brain. Known as the “silent thief of sight,” glaucoma causes gradual, painless vision loss, often without early symptoms. The most common form, open-angle glaucoma, develops slowly and can lead to irreversible blindness if untreated.

Causes and Risk Factors

Glaucoma is mainly caused by increased intraocular pressure (IOP), but can also occur with normal IOP. Risk factors include:

  • Age over 40 years

  • Family history of glaucoma

  • African descent (higher prevalence in Nigeria)

  • Diabetes and hypertension

  • Eye trauma or prolonged steroid use

Symptoms of Glaucoma

Early glaucoma usually has no symptoms. Advanced glaucoma can cause:

  • Peripheral (side) vision loss

  • Tunnel vision in late stages

  • Sudden eye pain and redness in acute angle-closure glaucoma

Diagnosis at SpecSMART Eye Clinic Ikoyi

We use advanced diagnostic tools including:

  • Tonometry to measure eye pressure

  • Optical coherence tomography (OCT) for optic nerve imaging

  • Visual field testing for peripheral vision assessment

  • Slit-lamp examination and gonioscopy

Treatment Options

While vision lost to glaucoma cannot be restored, treatment can prevent further damage:

  • Prescription eye drops to lower IOP

  • Laser therapies such as trabeculoplasty

  • Surgery in advanced cases
